Tim Byrne

You may have noticed if you’re a long-time reader that I have a deep respect for high-quality craftsmanship. It’s not just all polyethylene and powder-coated steel up in here! OK, most of the time it is, but I really love seeing what an experienced carpenter and craftsman can create in the workshop using other materials.

In this case, Tim Byrne whose work I discovered at ICFF, who takes apart old industrial machines and repurposes them as desks and tables. And get this — the machines become an interactive part of the table — functioning to raise and lower the tabletop to a height that works for you. Paired with thick glass or woods like African mahogany and rosewood, these are heirloom pieces for sure. I can’t show you the quality and weight of these pieces on the Internet, but I assure you that they are some of the more impressive pieces I’ve witnessed in quite some time. Tim’s one-of-a-kind pieces are high-quality functional art.
