Two Houses Connected by An Underground Tunnel: House Y2 by Destilat Architecture

Located on a narrow, steep lot nestled at the foot of the Pöstlingberg mountain in Austria, House Y2 is actually one house, divided into two skinny structures that are connected by an underground passageway. Designed by destilat Architecture + Design, the plan was adapted to the land the home is built on making most of the views of the Danube River below.

One of the structures is for the living area while the other one houses the sleeping quarters. From the outside, the house almost appears to be a duplex. The exterior of both are covered in vertical slats of larch wood giving a modern, uniform look.

Around front, the house is closed off, giving a sense of protection; it seems like a single-story home.

The tree column in the corner window is from a tree that had to be removed when the house was built. It was dried and the bark was stripped and now it supports the house as a column.
