Wood Worm Holes and the Forest of Phloem

What the heck is that title mean?

Wood Worm Holes and the Forest of Phloem are titles of the new furnishings collections from Good Wives and Warriors, the London-based creative partnership of Becky Bolton and Louise Chappell. To create this illustrative furniture series, they collaborated with Mexico City furniture company Pirwi.

Becky and Louise met while studying at the Glasgow School of Art. Rebecca means “good wife” and Louise means “warrior,” and together they create weird and wonderful illustrations and sprawling wall paintings. Pirwi was founded by two industrial designers, Emiliano Godoy and Alejandro Castro, and launched its first line in March 2007. Committed to high quality, green manufacturing and good design, their collection has over 70 objects by 12 designers and features cutting-edge pieces as well as award-winning designs now considered classics of contemporary Mexican design.

Fizz Gallery set up the collaboration and Becky and Louise were off to Mexico City to create their new line. The “Wood Worm Holes” desks is a reference to the knot holes found naturally on trees assuming they may be worm holes into parallel universes. Pirwi’s desks provided the platform for the gateways into theses strange new worlds that exist within the furniture itself.

In “The Forest of Phloem” is an homage to the microscopic by covering the small, but perfectly formed, wooden Pirwi trees in our own tangled patterns of bacteria, fungi, tree parasites, lichens, diseases and growth rings. The undesirable underworld of nature conquered and reclaimed the miniature trees.
