2013 Year in Review: Where I Work

Our Where I Work column allows us a chance to look inside the world of a designer or design professional to see where they make it all happen. Their creative spaces speak volumes about their process and their minds. Take a peek back to see where all the designer magic happens:

Nervous System
We started 2013 by visiting Nervous System, a design studio that combines science, art, and technology. The company’s Boston area studio is well-known for cranking out everything from housewares to 3D-printed jewelry with the help of their interactive applications.

Deadgood
Split between two studios, one in London and the other in Newcastle, Deadgood is headed up by design entrepreneurs Dan Ziglam and Elliot Brook, who produce a cutting edge collection of furniture, lighting, and interior pieces that come with “an unmistakably British sense of fun and eccentricity.”

Chilewich
We checked out the New York-based offices of Chilewich that founder and creative director Sandy Chilewich calls home. The company’s textiles are used for all kinds of commercial and residential applications, including changing the way people dress their tables at home and restaurants.

Blik
We moved on to highlight another American pioneer, Blik, founded by architect Scott Flora and food writer Jerinne Neils, who’ve been blazing the trails of wall decals since 2002. They gave us a grand tour of their Venice, California offices.

Michael Aram
Juggling two offices in New York City and another in New Delhi, India, designer Michael Aram focuses on craft-based design after discovering the indigenous traditions of metalworking.

CanvasPop
Every office needs a DJ booth, right? That’s the thinking of CanvasPop co-founders Nazim Ahmed and Adrian Salamunovic, whose Ottawa, Canada offices are more of an ‘art factory’ than a traditional office space.

Brooks Atwood of POD Design
Never one for boring, designer and professor Brooks Atwood’s Brooklyn-based studio is home to his firm, POD Design. Besides having tons of fun, the firm keeps busy creating wicked designs across all mediums, like architecture, interior design, and product design.

Robin Souter of The BIO Agency
We hopped across the pond to London to visit Creative Director Robin Souter in The BIO Agency’s quirky new offices. Souter himself designed the office with a bit of eccentricity with a dash of Victorian farmer’s market.

Lee Broom
We stayed in London to check out British product and interior designer Lee Broom’s studio with a brand new retail space attached. The busy designer also took on refurbishing his studio to go with the newly opened retail shop.

Pigeon Toe Ceramics
We visited the home of Pigeon Toe Ceramics in Portland, Oregon, where designer Lisa Jones produces two lines of handmade collections every year.

Mirkku Kullberg of Artek
Artek’s CEO Mirkku Kullberg has been running the famous Finnish housewares brand since 2005 and chances are you’ll find her in one of her three different office spaces, two in Berlin and one in Helsinki.

Caroline Williamson is Editor-in-Chief of Design Milk. She has a BFA in photography from SCAD and can usually be found searching for vintage wares, doing New York Times crossword puzzles in pen, or reworking playlists on Spotify.
