4 Views House by AR Design Studio

AR Design Studio recently completed the 4 Views house that’s located overlooking the city of Winchester and the surrounding countryside in the UK. Going with a non-traditional floor plan, they flipped the typical layout and put the bedrooms down below, making a cozy place to retreat. The social spaces are up top, which allows for the homeowners to enjoy the views.

The house is definitely not like the rest in the neighborhood – it has a flat, overhanging roof, dark grey brick, and is clad in cedar, making it feel cocoon-like.

The design is a special one. The homeowners had recently lost their daughter and they were looking at this project as a way to focus on the positive and to give their family a fresh start. Believing and learning that good architecture can help restore health, they took extra care with the design.

The house is built around a central garden that’s driven by the principle of the 3 N’s: Nature, Natural light, and Natural air. Around the zen garden stands four interlocking boxes that allow for the negative space in the center. In the garden, the heart of the home, stands a single olive tree.

The home is light and bright and provides three views of the South Downs, helping the couple to look forward to the future. The courtyard gives them another view, a place to pause and reflect. These four views are what gives the house its name.

The upstairs feels incredibly spacious with all of the windows and open garden.

The sliding glass doors completely open the space up and help provide cross ventilation.
