76 Newington Green Road in the UK by Amenity Space

76 Newington Green Road is on a narrow site in London. Designed by Amenity Space, the project was recently completed in May 2010. The building unites two time periods and is genuine social and sustainable approach by both the client and design team.

Oh the backsplash and the green tub! I love those details.

From the architects:

Amenity Space won planning permission in May 2009. The design subtly references the proportions, materiality and texture of the neighbouring buildings and number 73 bus, whilst maximising the building footprint. During the planning process, former Urban Design Officer at Islington Council remarked it was “the best design for an infill development in the borough.”

The project fulfills a vital role often overlooked by developers and house builders in that it is a holistic insertion into the urban fabric and creates additional environmentally sensitive housing. The sustainable aspects of the projects are inherent in both the building fabric and construction methods. However, its green credentials are extended, in that it will provide an affordable home within the local community.

Practical components on the building include a sedum roof, recycled building components, passive design features, an air source heat pump, sheep’s wool insulation and Insulslab concrete slab. The combined U Values are well below the permitted values described in the Building Regulations.paneling comprises a sections of reclaimed oak laminated and cut at an angle to accentuate the corner profile of the building.

Much of the interior work comprises contrasting surfaces and materials such as bare face plywood, exposed laminated beams and diagonally orientated floor boards. The stair is constructed in plywood and wraps around a triangular shaped void bringing daylight into every storey of the house.
