8th Avenue is a minimalist house located in Montreal, Canada, designed by Naturehumaine. The 1600-square-foot, single-family home underwent a complete renovation, transforming the two-story dwelling into a single dwelling unit by reorganizing the interior programs and constructing a 430 square foot extension in the back of the home.
The extension includes a master bedroom on the upper level and a family room on the ground level. The building resonates a unique characteristic to the typical Montreal laneway neighborhood. The architects describe the extension as a beacon of novelty and dynamism. While minimal work was done to the front facade, the extension was designed in contrast, with bright colors, an angled form, and generous glazing.
The architects were focused on exposing the existing wooden structure, which included both the walls and beams, and supporting them with natural materials. An interesting characteristic of the home includes a skylight and glass floor placed at the center of the home that filters natural light to both the upper and lower levels of the home.
