Olo Stool is a minimalist design created by France-based designer Joran Briand of Trust in Design. The stool, designed for a surf shop called Cuisse de Grenouille, endorses the codes of fabrication for the first surfboards ever made. The solid wood seat is separated into two parts, which are attached to a central metal lath that extend downward to form the seat’s legs and footrest.
Born in 1983 in Brittany, Joran Briand studied design at l’École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs, and at l’École Nationale des Arts Appliqués et des Métiers d’Art de Paris. In 2005, he established the Trust in Design studio and serves as Art Director. In parallel to his work at Trust in Design, Joran teaches design at the Parsons School of Paris, l’école de Condé, and L’école Bleue. The multidisciplinary studio offers creative services in product design, interior design, and graphic design.
The stool is constructed of lacquered metal and ash wood, with a nice detail where the wood is used at the foot of the metal legs. As of right now, the project is in the prototyping phase under private commission. I love how the intricate cross-construction of the metal legs are perfectly fitted inside the stool’s wooden surface.
