Soothing Chair by Dorja Benussi

Typically, sensory motor furniture is reserved for children with developmental issues or disabilities. However, Dorja Benussi believes that sensory motor, or as she calls it sensorimotor furniture, “should be ubiquitous and affordable for all.”

Thus, she created the Soothing Chair as part of her Sensorimotor Educational Equipment project. She believes that this kind of furniture can positively affect all children by encouraging their senses and improving the quality of memory and learning.

The Soothing Chair is a cocoon-like chair that serves several functions for the child. The non-fixed seat rocks the child gently, which helps concentration. If the child is feeling overwhelmed, the back pulls up and acts as a shield. The neoprene seat soothes the child, and these functions are helpful for all children, whether or not they have disabilities.
