Nokia OZO 3D Virtual Reality Video Camera Sees and Hears All

Why does Nokia’s newly unveiled OZO virtual reality camera look so familiar? It’s almost like the design arrived from a galaxy far, far away. All kidding aside, the spherical device is going to excite those in the digital video productions realm, considering its eight synchronized global shutter “eyes” with eight accompanying microphone “ears” are all engineered specifically with professional VR content creators in mind, the combination optimized for producing stereoscopic 3D video with fully immersive sound to match for cinematic effect.

Nokia Technologies, the research and technologies arm of the Finnish company primarily known for their mobile devices, is betting 3D/virtual reality content is only going to become more relevant and prevalent as films and games start incorporating more immersive experiences for viewers for VR viewing hardware. Unlike existing 3D video capturing devices, the OZO won’t need to digitally pre-assemble captured panoramic images, cutting down preview and production time.

The OZO hardware will be manufactured in Finland and will begin shipping at the end of the year. Just note, the OZO isn’t aimed at regular Jills and Joes, as the professional specs will undoubtedly be tied to a professional price somewhere in the 5 figure realm. For now, you can whet you appetite over at the Nokia OZO teaser countdown page.
