Herman Miller: The Picnic Posters

Steve Frykholm joined the Herman Miller Furniture Company as the first internal graphic designer they hired back in 1970. In his first year, he was asked to create a poster for the company picnic, so he set out to teach himself screen printing. He found the process easy and enjoyable and the employees began wondering what he was going to do next. The company picnics became a yearly event leading Frykholm to continue the series, named Steve’s Picnic Posters, which have now become a part of various permanent collections of museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art.
