Beach Waste Beauty: Embellished Sideboard Inspired by Barnacles

Stuart Haygarth has an unbelievable way of turning trash into something really damn cool and it’s called Barnacle. A simple photo book of deep sea ship wrecks led to his interest in things like barnacles and algae and how they alter the the ocean’s underwater landscape. As sunken ships lay decaying on the ocean floor, they morph over time as things like shellfish attach to them.

Instead of actual barnacles, Haygarth collected black plastic objects from Dungeness Beach in Kent and attached them to a plain sideboard, similar to the way nature would. To get that rich, uniform color, groupings of the plastic objects were cast in black polyester resin. Even though it still functions as a sideboard, you’d never know since every single inch of space is covered with a three-dimensional find.
