Invert Lighting by oato.

Invert is a minimalist design created by Utrecht-based designer oato. The goal of the project was to create a pendant light utilizing steel in order to create slits for small amounts of light to be visible outside the frame. The slits create subtle details that give the lamp a unique aesthetic whether on or off.

The lamp is constructed of three identical steel panels, each shaped in such a way that a small overlap is created on the vertical edges. The slit is large enough to emit soft, ambient lighting into its surrounding space, without being uncomfortable for the user to look at directly. The downwards emitting illumination is a soft spotlight, perfect for a dining table surface or entryway.

Although the lampshade securely encloses the light source, it is not difficult for the user to change the light bulb if needed. By simply unscrewing the messing element on top of the panels, it is possible to then lift the frame and reach the bulb. The lamp is currently available in matte white or grey.
