My wardrobe has become a little more sedate lately, primarily residing somewhere between preppy and tech-athletic, represented by a mostly monochromatic palette of blacks, greys, and whites. But I often hide a bit of flair. Socks are my secret fashionable pleasure (and apparently I’m not alone), an opportunity to represent my inner show-off without bringing too much attention until I sit down and my pant cuffs ride up to reveal a bit of pattern and color…a socksy secret.
My favorite socks are made by the Portland outfitters, The Athletic, who put out a dynamic catalog of socks that are comfortable for strolling around, hiking, cycling, or for the occasional game of one-on-one on the blacktop. Their socks are thin (some made with tech fabrics like Meryl Skinlife Technology), breathe well, and feel like second skin, offered in small, medium, or large sizing for a proper fit.
The Athletic began with a most unexpected design: founders and partners Jeremy Dunn and Julie Krasniak designed a pair of socks inspired by the Portland airport carpet. The Pacific Northwest design set loved the design homage, and from there the company has expanded into various designs and collaborations with artists and publications the last couple of years.
I highly recommend checking out their collection for continuing interesting collaborations with the likes of House Industries and Stay Wild (my go-to trail running socks), and their Instagram for updates.
