Aesop Mile End by Naturehumaine

Aesop Mile End is a minimalist space located in Montreal, Canada, designed by Naturehumaine. Aesop’s second Montreal signature store is situated in Mile End—a neighborhood characterized by the influence of generations of European immigrants who settled there from the late 19th Century, establishing a lively, eclectic community. Designed in collaboration with local architecture firm Naturehumaine, the 93-square-meter space reflects the vibrancy of this heritage through an architecture of movement, where motion is the key element to explore and understand the space.

Centrally positioned, a monolithic demonstration sink finished with locally sourced limestone anchors the space, compelling visitors to explore the nuanced interior; the stud walls have been fitted with a plywood structure composed of thin sheets that reveal contrasting color as visitors pass by. One side offers a grey tone, visible from the exterior, while the other presents a subdued green—an intriguing effect that varies depending on position and perspective.

Aesop’s nourishing formulations are displayed on thin brass shelving; positioned against the bright-hued backdrop, they appear almost to levitate within the intimate setting. At once raw and familiar in its materials, the space appears to be stripped to the bare bones, presenting itself as a deconstructed structure and a humble setting.
