Interior designers and NKBA K+B Insiders Mercedes Desio and Alberto Villalobos are the duo behind New York City-based design studio Villalobos Desio. Villalobos, who is Colombian, and Desio, who is Italian, have been working together since meeting at the New York School of Interior Design where they both received their degrees. After graduation, they launched a boutique, Etos, in New York City before coming together, each with their own unique aesthetic, to form Villalobos Desio, where they’ve been commissioned on residential projects in both the U.S. and Europe. Their diverse upbringings inspire cultural influences from around the globe. For this week’s Friday Five, Villalobos and Desio share five things that keep their inspirations up.

1. De Vera, NYC
We find this boutique inspirational because it is extremely well curated. Each piece displayed, whether it be art, objects, or jewelry, has a particular history that adds to the value of the experience. Entering the store is like entering a Renaissance cabinet of curiosities; it is a personal journey that enriches the curiosity of the viewer. I find it nearly impossible to leave without gaining some form of knowledge.
2. Artwork by Armando Villegas
This artist of Peruvian-Colombian origin makes us dream through his work. He used oil, watercolor and mixed media to represent the past and present of Latin American history. Looking at his work is like entering a surreal realm where the imagination runs amok. We cannot get enough of the faces of his Warriors with their piercing looks and strong features.

3. Getty Center, LA
The collection at the Getty is exceptionally well curated and varied, thus giving us a glimpse of the changes from medieval times to the present. Furthermore, you get to enjoy the beautiful complex designed by Richard Meier, characterized by its modern lines, open spaces and lush gardens. It is a visual treat and a stimulating visit for all the senses. It is one of our favorite museums because of the rich contrasts it offers.
4. London, UK
One of our favorite places to visit is London. With its great museums, antiques dealers, myriad stores and charming architecture, it is quite hard to be bored. There is always something new to discover, and we enjoy paying visits to our favorite dealers on Pimlico road to see what new finds we can run into. And at night, Mayfair offers a plethora of fun restaurants to go wine and dine at!

5. Yves Saint Laurent
One of the greatest designers of all times, Yves Saint Laurent was an interesting character and a great visionary. He transformed the way women’s fashion was thought of, and his influence can still be felt today. He is someone we admire also because of his love of art; he was an avid collector who left behind an unparalleled art collection. He remains a good role model for any interior designer, as his taste and revolutionary fashion aesthetic translated into the interiors he created, such as his beautiful estate and gardens in Morocco.
