A Beach House with a New Mid-Century Modern Addition

In the northern Sydney suburb of Mona Vale NSW, buck&simple completed a renovation and addition to the d+k house. The private beach residence was in need of more space, as well as improving on its connection to the outside, all while respecting the original home. Their goal was to increase the home’s efficiency by modernizing the arrangement and incorporating sustainable elements to improve its environmental status.

To start off, the layout was flipped to bring the living areas down to the ground level so they could connect to the outdoors. The private spaces were relocated to the upstairs for added privacy and to enjoy the views of the new green roof.

A light, textured brick was the main material for both indoors and out on the new volume, and it’s paired with a wood coffered ceiling that’s painted white.

The color scheme was kept minimal as to allow the homeowners’ artwork to become the focal point in each space.

Due to the climate, they were able to design a living green roof over the addition, which helps keep the interior cool during warmer temperatures. The high windows open up to create a cross breeze which also helps with temperature control.
