Montreuil Oak Chair Built with Glued Half-Lap Joints by Sebastian Erazo

Paris-based architect and furniture designer Sebastian Erazo designed the Montreuil oak chair as a continuation of a collaboration that began a year ago. The Mueble Campesino project partnered designers with experienced weavers in Chile which led to Erazo’s handcrafted pieces that combined wood and weaving. Now, he’s expanding on that collection with a new wooden chair that uses half-lap joints as a design detail.

Unlike the the previous pieces, Montreuil is made in Paris and replaces the woven seat with the same wood used for the body of the chair. Both the backrest and seat were rounded to better conform to the human body for comfort. While the components that touch the body have curves, the chair’s structure features sharp, square edges for contrast. The half-lap joints were an additional design detail easily noticed upon closer inspection.

The chair is topped off with a matte oilwax finish to protect it from scratches or water stains while allowing the wood to still breathe.
