Furnishing Utopia 3.0: Hands to Work

Furnishing Utopia 3.0: Hands to Work is an exhibition presented by Design Within Reach, which explores the design legacy of the Shakers. The theme for this exhibition was focused around chores, conventionally understood as tedious, burdensome work to be avoided.

The designers wanted to reexamine the concepts associated with the activities and tools surrounding household tasks, and proposed a renewed sense of engagement between humans, objects and their environment. The designers were tasked to explore the virtues of focused work and cleanliness that the Shakers regarded as a path to enlightenment.

The collection includes 50+ new objects created by 26 international designers. Hands to Work is curated by Studio Gorm, Christopher Specce and Ladies & Gentlemen Studio, with overall creative direction by Ladies & Gentlemen Studio.
