Friday Five with Renaud Vuaillat of Twenty First Gallery

Renaud Vuaillat, director and founder of Twenty First Gallery in the TriBeCa district of New York City, has had an enviable career with over twenty years of experience. It began at the Serpette flea market in Paris where he specialized in 18th century decorative arts, but Vuaillat quickly became the point person for a large part of the American art market. In 1999, he opened an antiques gallery in the Saint-Germain district in Paris. But a year later Vuaillat’s attention began to turn towards contemporary work, and by 2002 he had created his own line by redesigning historically fashionable pieces into more modern sizes with modern materials. Vuaillat began living between both Manhattan and Paris, selling and consulting, until relocating fully to New York City and opening Twenty First Gallery in 2006. The shift from last century to present day reflects his evolving taste and eye for design and detail, as well as a changing landscape. Today Vuaillat is sharing a few of his favorite things in Friday Five.

1.The Neue Galerie
The Neue Galerie is one of my favorite museums in New York City. I always manage to be inspired by their great Austrian and German art collection. I’m a huge fan of designs that came out of the Wiener Werkstätte, which can be seen at the Neue Galerie alongside masterpieces by Klimt and Schiele.

2. David Bowie
There are several musicians I’d like to name, but David Bowie is one of my all-time favorites because he’s not just a musician, he’s an all-around performer and icon. I could never get tired of listening to David Bowie. His song with the Pat Methany Group for the Falcon and the Snowman soundtrack is still one of my favorites – This Is Not America.

3. My electric bike
My electric bike completely changed my morning routine. My commute along the Hudson River is the perfect start to a workday. Sometimes I’ll ride my bike to the Chelsea Piers just for a swim in the pool at the sports and entertainment complex!

4. Le Servan
A meal at Le Servan is a must whenever I am back in Paris. The bistro is owned by two sisters and has delicious, colorful plates and a laidback yet refined atmosphere that I love.

5. François Corbeau
Francois Corbeau is a self-taught artist and creates eye-catching pieces with unique textures and materials like mirror polished tin. The way his work is able to play with light has inspired me and, after working together for over ten years, we are now developing a new exclusive edition of pieces for the gallery. Francois Corbeau is not only represented by Twenty First Gallery, but he is also a close friend of mine.
