The Gozney Dome Professional Grade Outdoor Oven

We don’t believe we’re alone when we say our backyard has been both a haven and sanctuary for the past year. And with spring and warm weather returning, and with it hopes for safer times and small outdoor gatherings, our thoughts have veered toward entertaining outside. High on our want list: the Gozney Dome Grill, an intersection of old school wood fired cooking with a few tech upgrades, including dial-in controls engineered to speed and heat things up to restaurant-grade temperatures.

There are multitudes of outdoor wood fire ovens available on the market for roasting, steaming, baking and smoking, and they all generally operate in the same way, utilizing a combination of shape and material to create a dense cavity capable of retaining heat and radiating it over an even cooking area. Designed in collaboration with product development consultants IDC, the Gozney Dome stands out for its contemporary good looks, one housing an array of integrated features intended to optimize cooking outdoors with variable heat, including a 30mm stone floor and insulated cavity, a built-in digital thermometer and display, dial air ventilation control and steam injector.

The Dome can cook using either wood alone or wood with gas, with the exterior covered in a ceramic bonded outer coating for outdoor use and durability.

Taking a page out from the tech realm, the Gozney Dome is also outfitted with an accessory dock, inviting use-specific upgrades like a cold smoking attachment or an automated pellet burner. An optional $299 wheeled stand adds mobility and storage, and a Dome Steam Injector accessory optimizes moisture for those looking to upgrade their bread baking game.

The Gozney Dome is capable of reaching cooking temperatures up to 950°F (with its door open), inviting the ability to sear steaks with that most desirable delectable char, while also retaining a moist and tender interior. Charring vegetables using this same wood fire method is also a flavorful technique we think the Dome would be adept at.

Unlike the standard stand-alone grill or smaller portable pizza ovens, the Gozney Dome weighs a hefty 128lbs even without any of the accessories; the weight is reflective of its density comprised of heat retaining materials and insulation (a ceramic fiber insulation wrap with an underfloor of calcium silicate insulation).

No doubt a $1,299 outdoor oven is a considerable splurge, but if you’re a home cook whose regular recipe repertoire includes pizza, bread, steaks and roasted vegetables, an argument could be made the Dome’s combination of sleek design and high temp performance is a reasonable investment that will pay for itself in its versatility. The Dome is currently available for pre-order in either a Bone or Olive finish at Gozney.com.
