Take 5: Rhythmic Wall Sculptures, a Game of Storytelling + More

Every other week we’re inviting one of the Design Milk team to share five personal favorites – an opportunity for each of us to reveal the sort of designs we use and appreciate in our own lives from a more personal perspective. Lifestyle Editor Vy Yang returns this week for our Take 5 series…

Take 5: Rhythmic Wall Sculptures, a Game of Storytelling + More

1. Artist Anna Kruhelska really caught my eye with her latest wall sculptures made from just plywood and paint. The sculptures have this rhythm and movement that makes you want to keep analyzing it until you realize you have to look away for a second because you’re getting dizzy (No? Just me?). I also love the way she plays with gradients, colors and light.

2. I’m anxiously awaiting the return of fashion designer Phoebe Philo, but since that won’t be until at least January 2022, I’ll have to find my fashion fix elsewhere. I always enjoy being hypnotized by Iris van Herpen’s geometric creations which look as ethereal as they do otherworldly. Seeing them on several different people at the Met Gala this year made me appreciate how they look and move off the runway. I can’t wait to see what she creates next but I’m sure it’s nothing short of incredible.

modern glassware with espresso and coffee

3. Holiday season is upon us and if you’re anything like me, you’re doing all your shopping before Halloween (I’ve already got the kids’ new Christmas pajamas delivered). If you know of any coffee lovers in your life, a great gift is a pair of these KINTO Kronos Espresso Cups with a bag of fresh beans from your local third wave coffee roasters. The glasses are an elegant alternative to the shot glasses you usually see at cafes and the freshly roasted beans will delight your recipient’s senses as soon as they open up their gift. (I highly recommend Jeong’s beans which I’ve bought and loved!)

bottles and boxes of a colorful haircare line

4. I’m usually not very loyal to any haircare brand but I can see that changing soon as I’m trying out Ceremonia, a clean haircare brand rooted in Latinx heritage. Founded by Babba (formerly of Away and Uber), the line was created to take care of hair of all types and all people inspired by the rituals Babba grew up with (her father was a hairdresser in Chile). I’m enjoying the entire line but especially love the Guava Rescue Spray because of California’s endless hot summer. The products are all affordable too making me even more inclined to buy again once I run out.

storytelling game

5. While the pandemic is far from over, I’m excited that the holiday season this year will look a bit more “normal” than it did in 2020. That is to say, I’m excited to have friends + family over to safely celebrate the holidays together. To reacquaint myself with people I love but haven’t seen in months, I’ll be pulling out Esther Perel’s Where Should We Begin, a game born out of the pandemic to connect and reconnect people through storytelling. There are silly prompts but also thought-provoking ones that might just bring you closer to the ones you already love. The second release sold out but pre-orders are available for early November shipping. Be sure to get yours early!
