Iso-Lounge Is a Gravity-Defying Chair By Jasper Morrison for Isokon Plus

Pushing the limits of physics, Jasper Morrison, in collaboration with London-based furniture brand Isokon Plus, has designed a cantilevered chair that seems to defy gravity. Manufactured from engineered plywood, Iso-Lounge Chair is a testament to the unparalleled strength of the material and the result of 18+ months of innovative development at the Isokon Plus London workshop.

While plywood is usually made of layers of thin wood veneer sheets glued on top of one another, Morrison and the Isokon Plus team removed layers in some areas to allow the chair to flex while adding more layers to other areas that required extra strength. Typical plywood also has the grain of each layer going in different directions which helps give the material strength and structure. However, the team experimented with the orientation and thickness of the veneer layers during the technical development and extensive prototyping in order for the cantilevered, slim silhouette design be made possible.
