Zaha Hadid + Karimoku Furniture Collaborate on an Upcoming Furniture Collection

Karimoku Furniture has announced a collaboration with Zaha Hadid Design, a collection of furniture that will begin being released in Spring 2022 with a side chair. To celebrate, they’ve pulled together a comprehensive exhibition of ZHD‘s work at the company’s own showroom and gallery space, Karimoku Commons Tokyo. The highlight is a preview of the upcoming “SEYUN” Collection, which will ultimately include chairs, armchairs and tables designed by ZHD and crafted by Karimoku Furniture. The upcoming collection embodies Karimoku’s ‘high tech high touch’ ethos and Zaha Hadid Design‘s strive for pioneering design.

The two brands began their process by exploring the making of wood furniture that shares the aesthetic of Zaha Hadid. “This collaboration combines ZHD’s unmistakable design language and inventive approach to materiality with Karimoku’s uncompromising quality standards, achieved through the implementation of the most advanced technologies and manufacturing processes,” shared Woody Yao, director at Zaha Hadid Design. The hardness of the wood paired with the lightness of the design create a juxtaposition long before asymmetrical surfaces are joined together. Bringing together machine-made and hand-finished techniques, the furniture really shows off Zaha Hadid’s design language and Karimoku’s manufacturing skills.

The exhibition includes architectural models from Hadid’s impeccably kept archive. They’ve been reproduced in wood, giving visitors a chance to view her work on a much different scale. It also gives an overview of Zaha Hadid Design’s portfolio, covering everything from fashion and jewelry design to home accessories and furniture to carpets and lighting systems. The exhibition encourages visitors to discover and engage with examples of the studio’s work, sharing the wide expanse of Hadid’s contributions to architecture and design. If you find yourself in Tokyo, it will be on display through December 3rd at 2-22-5, Nishiazabu, Minato Ku, Tokyo To, 106-0031, Japan.
