The Award-Winning Low Carbon Footprint Aline Outdoor Chair

We love putting our support behind emerging design talent and the organizations that help them succeed. Today, we’re sharing the Aline outdoor chair, a project executed by Willie Tay and Christophe Gaubert with the support of National University of Singapore’s Design Incubation Centre (DIC). DIC sometimes participates in design consultancy with other NUS faculties and external companies, which is what Aline is a result of. The chair is part of an outdoor furniture collection created for the first Net Zero Energy building at the School of Design and Environment (SDE) of NUS.

Aline’s lightweight, stackable, weather-resistant design was inspired by the building itself, with green and sustainability at the forefront. Curvaceous lines in bold yellow are created with readily available manufacturing techniques and standard aluminum tubing. This approach makes common sourcing and production issues all but eliminated. Aline is put together with welding, and doesn’t require any screws or additional assembly, making future additions to the collection easy to create in new shapes and sizes.

The Aline outdoor chair is the proud winner of the Red Dot Design Award: Product Design 2021 (Germany) and the DFA Design for Asia Award 2021 – Silver Award (Hong Kong). The chairs are currently in use at the NUS SDE with similarly designed tables.
