Repurposed Scrap Veneer Gives the George Collection Its Unique Appearance

Experimentation with materiality always grabs our attention, as in the case of George. A contemporary furniture collection designed by Marco Campardo for SEEDS, the pieces are created using discarded materials from the industrial production of veneer. To begin making this artificial wood, various pieces of scrap are chosen from Alpi’s warehouse located in Emilia Romagna. They’re then glued and pressed together to create a thick piece of unique wood, making what was once a surface level element structural.

Hand-crafted objects made using this newly made material feature carefully chiseled detailed edges, with the result bringing to attention the juxtaposition between the natural and artificial worlds. (The process is also a nod to George Nakashima.) The George collection includes a series of dark stools and tables in this newly created wood alternative that invites you to question the ways in which we value materiality today.
