A Lacquered Table Marries Japanese and Italian Design Aesthetics

By now you’ve probably heard the term “Japandi,” a term that brings together the best of Japanese and Scandinavian design aesthetics. We need a new word now for one that marries Japanese and Italian design (Itapan? Japanlian? Chime in down in the comments!). The reason is that Ponti Design Studio, a Hong Kong-based product and industrial design firm led by Italian-born founder Andrea Ponti, has released a side table called the Hyobodo Fuoco that showcases a new kind of East-meets-West aesthetic.

The side table is manufactured by Hyobodo, a Urushi (Japanese lacquerware) art studio in Kyoto, Japan. The table is cut by CNC machines to give it its modern Italian design, with its perfect proportion, rounded corners, and precisely-cut edges. Afterwards, Hyobodo paints it a traditional Japanese lacquer coating for a smooth and glossy color. The fiery color (Fuoco in Italian) refers to the table’s unique visual features and warm color.
