Cold Picnic’s New Rugs Are Inspired by a French Movie

In French filmmaker Claire Denis’ 1999 movie Beau Travail, the setting is placed in the eastern African country Djibouti, whose landscape is raw, varied, and extreme. Mix in the tension between locals and colonizers; memory and present; and repression and freedom, and you have a gripping movie to pass the next hour and a half. It’s this celebrated film that Cold Picnic was inspired by to create its new rug collection, Beau Travail Part 1.

The series of rugs pay homage to Djibouti’s environment and the film’s hazy style. Each one is hand-tufted in India at a Goodweave-certified factory using 100% Oeko-Tex wool that’s been colored using natural dyes. The rugs are available in five sizes (2’x3’, 4’x6’, 6’x9’, 8’x10’, and 5’x5’) and start at $210. In mid-October 2022, Cold Picnic will launch the second half of the collection.
