An Old Horse Stable and Coach House Become a Home

Netherlands-based architectural firm Zecc Architecten worked closely with BYTR architecten, another local office, to renovate this coach house and stable to the spacious home it is today.

The coach house and stable originate from 1760, which meant the space was not suitable for modern day living. What is now the living room was once a stable with hay racks and water troughs for the horses. All of that was removed while still leaving original details in place. The entryway is the old tack room and the kitchen was the coach house.

The new solid oak staircase becomes the focal point of the space, with the upper half risers remaining open to allow light to flood into the kitchen.

I love the original details from the stable that still remain in the living room.

Hey kid, whatcha watching?

Above the kitchen becomes a light-filled lounge area, complete with a newly added wood stove. The original wooden trusses make the space feel cozier and give the room character.

The bedrooms and bathrooms are accessed from this space.
