Are we really that different?: An Exhibition You Can Eat

Chef Bob and I have always prided ourselves in rooting Pinch Food Design in Chelsea, the heart of New York’s art gallery scene. We find the neighborhood inspiring and ever changing. Walking by the gallery windows day after day inevitably influences our work…and we love that. Recently we stumbled upon an installation presented by Gagosian as part of Social Works, a group exhibition curated by the newly appointed director/curator Antwaun Sargent, whose focus is on the relationship between art, desires, identities and representation. We were most impressed by the collaboration between Diller Scofidio + Renfro and artist, activist and Just Above Midtown gallery founder Linda Goode Bryant on Are we really that different? – a fully operational urban farm that draws from Goode Bryant’s work with Project EATS to respond to issues of food equity. Vegetables and flowers are harvested each week and then hung on the gallery walls inviting visitors to eat them.

Over her nearly 50-year career, Linda Goode Bryant has assumed many roles: gallery owner, filmmaker, farmer, entrepreneur. She founded the gallery Just Above Midtown (1974–86), which will be the focus of an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in the fall of 2022. And with any luck, Pinch will be catering the opening!
