Bang & Olufsen Beosystem 72-22 Marks 50 Years of the Beogram 4000 Turntable

The intrinsic thread between designer Jacob Jensen and Bang & Olufsen is sewn so tight through their 27-year partnership, it’s hard to imagine one without the other. Beginning with Jensen’s manifestation of his “Different but not strange” design ethos in the form of the 1967 Beomaster 5000 tuner and amplifier, the partnership pioneered a marked turning point in the realization of a singular and recognizable design language still associated with the name, Bang & Olufsen.

Over the span of 27 years Jensen would design 234 products for the Danish audio-video brand, but it’s the unmistakable dual-arm tangential tonearm Beogram 4000 Series turntable, with its brushed aluminum plinth and platter that almost hints of the compact disc decades before its appearance that has retained considerable amount of fanfare amongst both older and newer audiophiles and design aficionados alike. Perhaps attributable to the explosion in interest in vinyl, Bang & Olufsen would launch a Classic initiative to “refurbish, restore and recreate” in 2020, giving the Beogram a refreshed finish with a few component updates within.

Noting this historical partnership, it seems no surprise the Danish electronics brand is celebrating the 50-year anniversary of one of Jensen’s most iconic designs – the Beogram 4000 Series turntable – in the form of a highly limited edition new music system, each centered around a recreated Beogram turntable, a pair of Beolab 18 speakers, Beoremote Halo, and a collector’s cabinet for connectivity, charging, and vinyl record storage.

The Beosystem 72-22 arrives as a continuation of this celebration of craft, with the “72-22” moniker a nod to the turntable’s year of origin – 1972 – and the year of its re-creation – 2022.

“The Beosystem 72-22 seamlessly connects a 50-year-old design classic to contemporary speakers and technology, keeping our products relevant well past the industry standard and carving out a space for consumer electronics in the world of functional collectible design,” says Mads Kogsgaard Hansen, Senior Global Product Manager, Product Circularity & Classics Program at Bang & Olufsen.

Limited to a mere 30 music systems exclusively for the US, the 2022 resurrection of the Beogram 4000 turntable paired with its contemporary components stands will undoubtedly appeal to those who seek and value a certain level of aesthetic detail whether a system is on or off.
