During NYCxDesign week, we ventured to the Moroso showroom where a new outdoor collection designed by Sebastian Herkner was on display. The designer himself was on hand detailing, and performing, the inspiration for the pieces – the mating dance of male ostriches (banjooli in Wolof language) who stretch their wings to showcase their beauty to the females. Named Banjooli, the series continues Moroso’s M’ Afrique outdoor collection from 2009.
The extended collection includes a bench, two side tables, and a lounge chair, all with bold color combinations made from woven threads normally used for fishing nets. Each piece is handwoven, and like us humans, has flaws.
You can spot the inspiration in the chair and bench’s arms that span out similar to the ostrich’s wings.
We made the designer pose and test out the pieces on display!
