The Bean Bag Reinvented: Lujo

In 1968, three young Italian designers showed up at the Milan headquarters for Zanotta, a leader in non-conformist Italian product design, with a creation dubbed Sacco. And it was ingenious in its simplicity: a sack filled with semi-expanded polystyrene beads that could function as a seat. It was lightweight, portable and molded to any body form. It was an instant hit and this soon-to-be iconic armchair became the symbol of 1960s youth.

Fast-forward nearly fifty years, the design team at Lujo, have given the Italian design a modern update. The New Zealand-based team excels at creating furniture that allows you to ‘put life on pause’. Every piece designed by Lujo is created to maximize relaxation, be aesthetically pleasing and stand up to the wear-and-tear of daily life (backed up by their five-year product warranty).

The latest design from the firm, the Kyoto Indoor Bean Bag, was created with the same attention to detail that the company has become known for in the outdoor space. With the same emphasis on comfort and style as Lujo’s iconic Tulum outdoor range, these are designed for indoor chilling. They are also handcrafted in New Zealand and are constructed with a commercial-grade textile that is high performance and easy-to-care for (after all, it’s hard to achieve that optimum state of relaxation when you’re worried about a wine spill). If you want to carry that look outdoors, the Kyoto is also available in a weather-friendly Sunbrella fabric.

And if the modern vibe of the bean bags doesn’t give you a hint that these are not your usual bean bags, the five-year warranty certainly will! A modern look plus comfort as a priority means these bean bags are guaranteed to become the most sought after seats in your home.

The Lujo bean bag ottoman forms the centerpiece of the of Kyoto Collection. It’s a multifunctional piece – perfect for a last minute seat, a place for a snack or weary feet.

In addition, to bean bag seating, the line features pieces like an ottoman and footstool that can function equally well with the collection or individually (We can imagine a bright yellow ottoman could be just what the doctor ordered in an otherwise staid design plan.)

The small bean bag footstool is perfectly proportioned to serve as a side table, but can also transition as a place to put your feet up.

When designing a space for living, comfort is our number one priority. (Form does follow function!) We’re down on record as huge fans of the Lujo siesta-inducing modern hammocks. This new line of bean bags looks equally ready for nap time. And if we now have you convinced that the only thing that will make your life more complete is a Kyoto indoor bean bag, Lujo is so sure you’ll fall in love with the luxury of comfort, that along with that five-year warranty, they offer free shipping worldwide.

The company has been a go-to for modern outdoor furniture for over a decade now (they have everything from free-standing hammocks to their signature Tulum outdoor bean bags to giant outdoor cushions).
