Bec Brittain Debuts Lighting Inspired by NASA Parachutes

The renowned lighting designer Bec Brittain has presented Paraciphers, her first exhibition in two years, at Emma Scully Gallery. Brittain created a series of flowing patterns that resemble the rhythm of flowers in the wind by drawing inspiration from the movement of inflated parachutes. The idea was inspired by Brittain’s love with NASA’s wind tunnel testing of parachutes.

In the patterning of the parachute, she sought to catch some of those brief moments in the patterning of the parachute like moments of light preserved in time

Connections are made between the quality of the parachutes and the patterns they generally exhibit and some of Brittain’s earlier works through shared instances of refraction, reflection, and shadow. In the patterning of the parachute, she sought to catch some of those brief moments in the patterning of the parachute like moments of light preserved in time.

As soon as she started utilizing those patterns, she understood she wanted to organize them and give them more context. She interpreted communications encoded in telegraph code through the use of color to create patterns in the fabric. Each “parachute” contains a message that addresses the shortcomings of our existing society while promoting radical equality and community.

Patterning can be found in three of the parachutes on display
