Boutique Hotel in Maine Inspired by the Local Newspaper

Portland, Maine’s historic Portland Press Herald building was reimagined by New York-based Stonehill & Taylor into a contemporary hotel that recognizes its newspaper past. The Press Hotel recently opened its doors offering 110 rooms and a series of public spaces that emanate a level of modern sophistication that celebrates the building’s history.

Old typewriters were given new life as part of an installation by Erin Hutton, who collaborated with the Maine College of Art, which spans a 2-1/2 story wall.

Grey herringbone tiled floors ground the lobby area which features pops of orange and navy.

The lounges, meeting rooms, guest rooms, and gallery space all house local art that was hand-picked.

An original scale that was used to weigh newspapers has been repurposed into a sculpture outside of the fitness center.

A three-dimensional piece behind the reception desk is made of large letterpress letters.

In the guest hallways, actual headlines from the Press Herald were used to create custom wallpaper. The carpet looks as if some of the letters fell onto the floor below.

The guest rooms were inspired by the offices of a 1920’s writer complete with writers’ desks that house all of the appliances.
