Color House by CUBO Design Architect

This minimalist house located in Kanagawa, Japan was designed by CUBO design architect. The site is situated in Otobashi, a dense residential area some distance away from Nagoya Station. The project, which is for a father and his daughter, focused on a modern Japanese aesthetic with artistic flair throughout the space, mixed with vivid color schemes.

A spacious void is placed at the entrance to provide a buffer zone from the rest of the interior. The father’s contemporary Japanese-style, one-story space occupies the right side of the void space. The left side occupies the daughter’s living space, which is also adjacent to the interior courtyard. An eclectic color palette, reminiscent of traditional oriental art, juxtaposes a colorful lantern and black-colored tatami mats to produce a creative yet comfortable space.

The structure of the residence consists of simple rectilinear volumes in order to harmonize with the surroundings. The painting on fusuma—Japanese sliding paper door—was created in collaboration with an artist. The bedroom on the second floor is designed with reference to a European design hotel. One of the walls is painted indigo blue and adorned with an ivy-inspired pattern, suggesting the atmosphere of the interior space.
