Cryptographer & Encoded Textiles

Noting that messages are now more often sent digitally, a group of creatives got together to make digital messages become more tangible, yet still somewhat cryptic. The Cryptographer that they created makes a pattern using bleach on fabric that is actually a special, encoded message.

Raw Color collaborated with Remon van den Eijnden and Peter Bust on the software, and Bart van der Linden on the elementary programming and direct control elements of the engines. Studio Watt took care of the engineering and electronics.

Using a pen attached to a print head, the bleach is applied to the textile in varying shades.

The icons are based on English letters in order of frequency used (etaoin shrdlc umwfgy pbvkj xqz).

The project is being presented for the first time at Dutch Invertuals Retouched during Salone. The initiator and curator is Wendy Plomp and other participants include Daphna Laurens, Edhv, Mieke Meijer, Jetske Visser, Jeroen Wand, Maurizio Montalti, Kirstie van Noort, Susana Camara & Mike Thompson, Adrien Petrucci, Paul Heijnen. Sounds like a great exhibition! I hope to see more from this group.
