A Dental Office That Feels Like Home

We all know going to the dentist can be rather unpleasant and uncomfortable with the typical office decorated in a generic, sterile decor. Luckily there are dentists out there looking to make a change which is why we love this Portland, Oregon-based dental office. Designed by Fieldwork Design, the homey offices of Horacek Dental were once an old wood shop so the designers wanted to honor the industrial character the building had while staying true to their Portland roots.

Keeping the industrial feel of the space, they kept the HVAC pipes exposed instead of concealing them. The ceilings were kept raw with wood beams left uncovered. Old sanding drums from the wood shop were refurbished and turned into hanging lights.

Salvaged beams were used to make a focal wall behind the reception desk, tying in the beams overhead.

Recycled felt wool was used on the walls to help with acoustics, avoiding having to do a dropped ceiling. They also incorporated other eco-friendly elements by using soy foam insulation, zero VOC paint, sky lights to bring in natural light, and they collect storm water on site.

The doctor’s goal was to create a non-traditional space with a modern, comfortable feel and it’s clear that they achieved that.
