Dino Sanchez is a New York City-based artist and designer. His background is in Industrial Design, but his work spans a number of creative outlets. He recently started a public art installation project called, “Will You Ever Use Me Again?” involving pencils etched with it’s namesake. The series is meant to be humorous, but also as a reminder that technology has displaced our use of a basic, steadfast tool of craft. Dino is currently preparing for a show entitled POP_UNDER_SHOP presented by Vitrine and Specific Merchandise.
7:00 AM: Get ready. Eight months ago, my wife and I got ourselves a new alarm clock, far cuter and better than the one we were using. Unfortunately we don’t have control over when it goes off, so for the most part our days start out fairly early. It’s actually quite nice to have that time to hang out, have some breakfast, and get ready for the day at a slower pace than before.
8:00 AM: Start making things. A few months ago, I created this space of gifs, a series of low tech animations of 3 or 4 steps. They’re really quick to execute and there’s no finite end date, kind of a creative ideal. I make a couple here and there where time permits. Eventually I’d like the space to be so massive that it becomes difficult to comprehend.
10:30 AM: Take the train. I’m heading into the city for a lunch meeting and to work on some pieces that I’m creating for the POP_UNDER_SHOP show. The opening is on April 13th at the Fitzroy Gallery in Soho.
12:00 PM: Lunch. I’m meeting with Christian Schwartz, long time friend, colleague, and type designer. We’re discussing the possibility of collaborating on a project sometime later this year between myself and his type foundry, Commercial Type. I’m always looking to create things with people who work in a different space than I do; a lot of odd and different things can happen…hopefully.
1:30 PM: Keep Air Fresh installation. It’s been almost 3 years and nearly 250 installations, so pretty much everywhere I go, they’re with me. This install is at a great cafe in the Lower East Side called The National.
2:00 PM: Work in the shop. Checking a set of laser cut pieces I had made for a series of limited edition lamps that will be at the POP_UNDER_SHOP.
The series is called STACKS : LAMPS and will be a limited edition of 20 available through Vitrine. This series and ones to follow under the STACKS name will all be pieces that I make by hand. For most of the design work I’ve done there’s been a detachment in the process between the initial idea and the end product, so this allows me to be there every step of the way. I know every piece in the series, and there’s something nice about that.
6:00 PM: Head home. I have a ridiculous obsession with Free Cell and have missed my stop a few times because of it.
7:00 PM: Make dinner. Cooking is great, and if I could do it every day I would. It’s creativity, craftsmanship, science, and a final presentation to a crowd all bundled together in what can sometimes be as quick as half an hour.
8:00 PM: Eat dinner. It’s been a while, but we finally have room and a place for a dining table, so a proper dinner with my family is all that more enjoyable.
10:00 PM: Underground radio set. A project I recently started with a few friends that really just spawned out of missing the radio and collectively listening to music. Radio is still there, but I think we’ve all strayed away from it a bit in using our personal devices. So each of us puts together a set every week or so, and then we all tune in. So far, it’s working great.
12:00 AM: Done. Sleep.
