Arte Luise Kunsthotel

Destination Design brings us to Berlin this month. If you’re headed over, we hope it’s just one stop on a grand European tour. Rather than blowing your budget on super luxe accommodations, we like the idea of a more cultural, artsy experience. Arte Luise Kunsthotel has a classic, Old World façade, but inside holds one surprise after the next. Each of the 48 rooms was designed by a different artist, most from Berlin, and range from minimalist to surreal to pop to even a tiny bit country. The wonderfully stripe-y lobby pictured above was designed by the Brooklyn-based German artist Markus Linnenbrink, who’s well-known for his drip paintings, which we featured back in March. There’s also a guest room in which one is surrounded by such stripes. But all the rooms are unique and fun. We chose our 8 favorites below.

Christoph Platz’s sculptures represent the outer shell, devoid of content. In this case, it’s clothing without people on the walls of this whimsical room.

Artist Roman Schmelter created a Mediterranean landscape in his signature surreal style.

Three life-size female figures painted directly on the semicircular wall accentuate the room designed by Elvira Bach.

A tribute to Edward Hopper by Volker Marz.

Concentrating on the moment when the human eye tries to “zoom in” on an object, artist Stefan Jung transfers these images to canvas in his wall-sized painting, inspired by the night-time view from the hotel room window into Marienstrasse.

Andy Warhol inspired artist Heiner Meyer’s Marilyn Monroe room.

The spirit of Carl Spitzweg is present here in what is perhaps his most famous painting, the “Poor Poet.” Artist Andreas Paeslack used the painting as the basic motif for the room, creating what amounts to a three-dimensional reproduction of it.

The hotel lobby features a sculpture by Dutch artist Hans van Meeuwen.
