The last stop on the Dwell Home Tours East Side & Downtown Tour 2013 is at Tattuplex. Tattuplex is an all-steel custom prefab duplex located on the east side of Silverlake in Los Angeles, California. Designed by Tom Marble of Marbletecture for a client that happens to be a male nurse and a Zen Buddhist monk, the duplex consists of a 1,100-square-foot, one-bedroom unit below with a 600-square-foot studio with a wrap around deck, above.
The structure is made of prefabricated kit of parts that sits atop a cast-in-place concrete foundation. Due to the client’s religious beliefs, no right angles were allowed in the design. The design started in SketchUp (3D drawing software) and then was translated into Revit (a building software) before it could be digitally be fabricated by EcoSteel.
The interior features polished concrete floors and light wood details that include the kitchen and bathroom cabinets, doors, and some home furnishings.
Inside you really begin to notice the lack of right angles, from the kitchen design to the walls – everything is built with clever angles.
You also see steel on the ceilings, the same steel that is on parts of the home’s exterior.
