A Fashion Collection Based On Undesigning

Undesign. Thou shalt not, design.

MaxTanCampaign_06

For their Spring/Summer 2016 collection, MAX.TAN went a completely different direction. Rather than obsess over design, they decided to undesign. With the belief that we are all inherently flawed, they believe that perfection is impossible to achieve, yet all we do is strive for perfection. As a result, this constant yearning can ruin the creative process. However, we still insist on following these rules of perfection in our own (flawed) ways.

This collection explores a world without a sense of ‘perfection’– when rules and standards are all erased, what creativity shines through? More growth, more exploration, and fresher design. Instead, they wipe the slate clean and start over with no preset ideas or expectations. Surprising silhouettes, exaggerated details, and detailed tailoring and draping are key characteristics of this collection. Mostly neutral blacks and whites, a dramatic red creates a sharp contrast to add an unexpected touch.

In order to gain, one has to let go. In order to improve, one has to take a step back. To design without the design in mind is still a form of creation.
