Favorites from Dwell on Design 2013

Over the weekend, Design Milk headed to Los Angeles for the hottest modern event in the West: Dwell on Design. If you have been with us long enough, you’ll know I haven’t been there since 2008 (although we’ve been since then in spirit and touched on it last year)! Over the past few years, we’ve been very lucky to share the Dwell exclusive house tours. You can see this year’s tours being shared over the next two weeks right here. Now, hold on to your hats, ladies and gentleman—this is a long one!

dwell-on-design-2013-murals

As soon as I walked in and took a few steps I was greeted with a series of gigantic murals. Hosted by Dropshop Studios, 13 LA artists were live painting over the weekend to honor the history of murals and street art in LA.

illumino-lightboard

Illumino’s fun, lightboard makes the whiteboard seem so much more boring.

ampersand-tile-house-fifty-two

I fell for these ampersand tiles from House Fifty Two. You can see their new textile collection in the background. The wallpaper was pretty awesome, too.

whyrhymer-california-light

This California light was my favorite piece from the entire show. By WhyrHymer, who we featured previously, this one is dipped in 24K gold. But you can probably get a plain old metal one :) It was very difficult to get a good picture of this, but trust me that it’s beautiful.

Can you spot the Infinity Drain?

caliber-grill

I wanted to take one of these Caliber grills home with me, especially this little blue one.

Emeco was showing these new Parrish side chairs by Konstatin Grcic.

Brian Bosworth’s (bkbceramics) pottery line was stunning.

golden-gate-bridge-furniture

Did you know you could buy furniture made from steel from the Golden Gate Bridge? Yep.

total-eclipse-lamp-siv-lier

My other favorite piece from the show was this Total Eclipse lamp by Siv Lier, which was being shown in the Inside Norway section.

haand-faceted-wall-tile-sculptures

I also loved these sculptural wall tiles by Haand.

modfire-standing-fireplace

I have always been a Modfire fan, and this giant orange one told me it wants to come live in my backyard.

heather-palmer-vase-forms-glass-wood

In the Handful of Salt-curated section called 100% California, I really enjoyed seeing these forms by Heather Palmer.

method-homes-JCP-home-dwell-on-design

JCP Home furnished a Method Homes prefab house, too. It’s amazing how far JCP has come… let’s hope they can keep it up!

nintendo-controller-wooden-table

Ending on a high note: the fully functional wooden Nintendo table by Bohemian Workbench was a huge hit. It even had a gun for playing Duck Hunt cleverly placed in a leather holster on the side of the table.
