Flying Robot Cleaning System Wins Electrolux Design Lab

Design Milk went to Milan last year to check out the 2012 Electrolux Design Lab finalists and the 2013 competition has been under way with a new design deemed the winner. Mab, designed by Adrian Perez Zapata of Colombia, was named the winner of the 2013 Electrolux Design Lab competition which was inspired by the theme of Urban Living. The design students were encouraged to create a solution for Social Cooking, Effortless Cleaning, or Natural Air in the home. Mab is a flying robot concept that consists of hundreds of flying mini robots that clean surfaces just by touching them with a drop of water. The automated cleaning system starts by scanning the house to see what needs to be cleaned and then sends robots flying to go clean them. Fingers crossed this design comes to life at some point, right?

Mab was selected from more than 1,700 submissions from 60 countries that were then narrowed down to the top eight finalists. This design was chosen as the best groundbreaking design solution of the future, along with being named the People’s Choice winner. Zapata won 5,000 Euros and a six-month paid internship at an Electrolux design center of his choice.
