Friday Five with Rogan Gregory

Rogan Gregory’s name is most often associated with the fashion world, but the New York City-based sculptor has been steadily amassing a collection of sculptural works and paintings over the last decade. He began as a design consultant for luxury fashion brands before designing his first eponymous collection of clothing in 2001. 2004 saw the launch of Loomstate, a brand he co-founded, and then in 2005, he designed his first clothing collection for Edun, a brand started by Bono and his wife, Ali Hewson. In 2007, he won the Vogue/CFDA fashion fund away. Throughout that time, he was continually working on his own sculptural work, focusing on natural forms, ecological systems, and evolutionary biology. Gregory’s hand-sculpted pieces made out of wood and metal bridge the gap between art and design with their organic shapes and muted palettes. His work will be on display May 2nd – June 23rd, 2016 in NYC at R & Company, who are holding their first solo show of his at their gallery. In this week’s Friday Five, the prolific sculptor shares what keeps him inspired.

1. Brancusi atelier at the Pompidou center in Paris.
There is no way to fully appreciate the work of Brancusi or any other artist without experiencing the space they work in and learning about the environmental and social conditions they work under.

4. “Dauntless” tri fin shaped by Chris Christensen has never failed me…
Form meets function, art meets science… waves, wind, and style are constantly moving and evolving and so are surfboard shapes.

5. Rick Owens.
I admire his pattern making innovation, materiality finesse and his ability to maintain discipline and aesthetic truth in an industry constantly trying to pull you down… his objects d’art are equally impressive.
