Friday Five with Jaime Hayon

After last week’s Friday Five with Michael Graves I figured it would be all downhill from there, but not so! I am excited to have Spanish artist-designer Jaime Hayon as this week’s F5 guest.

Hayon’s wide client base spans diverse functions and mediums, including domestic furniture for b.d. ediciones, Fritz Hansen (FAVN sofa), Bernhardt Design Established and Sons, Moooi, Gaia and Gino, among others. He has designed lighting fixtures for Metalarte and Swarovski and sophisticated objects for Bisazza, LladrĂł and Baccarat. He has also executed complete interiors for leading hotels, restaurants and retail establishments.

Jaime currently resides in Valencia, with offices in Barcelona and Treviso. His work has appeared in the most prestigious art and design publications worldwide. He has won numerous awards. He was guest of honor at the 2008 Interieur Biennial in Belgium, the youngest person ever to receive the accolade.

Here are some items that inspire Jaime…

1. Josef Hoffmann: Sitzmaschine Armchair
This is the first mechanical reclining chair. The backrest can change its position. I find the shape fascinating and the concept behind it, even more so. Even now, the shape is so modern and special.

2. Jurgen Bey: Double chair
I have always loved this piece. I find it reflects great conceptual innovation: a new starting point for a design was created. Instead of using a design, he introduces the use of a strategy as a parting point.

3. Arne Jacobsen – Revolving Ashtray
I’ve always found this piece to be so clever. Its simplicity and functionality is incredible.

4. Constantin Brancusi – Sculpture “Bird in Space” 1926
It is a light and elegant piece. A very intelligent material combination was used.

5. E- Type Jaguar (1961)
The refinement of the shape and the material combination used creates a timeless design that is full of character. I find it very interesting how it manages to reflect the values of its time in such a beautiful way.

And a 6th for good measure:

6. Pott Cutlery
These come from the best cutlery manufacturer in the world. Although the design might seem overly simple, when you take one of these pieces into your hand, this perception is completely altered: the quality, the material treatment, the weight and precision…
