London-based Kate Moross is an award-winning graphic designer, illustrator, and art director whose transformative work has brought a fresh perspective to brands and artists like MTV, Disclosure, Sam Smith, Ray-Ban, Dreamland, Vice, Young Turks, and One Direction, to name a few. Kate landed on the scene in 2008 before founding Studio Moross in 2012 to bring about more collaboration. Just recently, a partnership with MOO resulted in a limited edition set of journals featuring Kate’s signature illustrations, marking an easy way to acquire some of Moross’ work. For this week’s Friday Five, read on to see Kate’s colorful picks which are just as colorful as her creativity.
1. My Custom Keyboard
I sit at my computer for most of the day, running a company means I have a lot of time on my keyboard. I recently designed my own custom model and it makes working a little bit more colourful and typing a little more bouncy. I have Cherry MX keys, a custom typeface, and I chose the colour for every single key. I even have one key that says ‘tune’ which just plays my favorite song on demand.
2. Maggie West’s Plant photos
I found Maggie’s work online through her photo portraits and the benefit exhibition she ran for Planned Parenthood. I fell in love with her colourful portraits that celebrate the nude bodies of her subjects in a kaleidoscope of coloured lights. Woven in between these projects are beautiful still life images of plants, some of the pictures are so surreal they look digitally composited.
3. Masayoshi Matsumoto Balloon Animals
Because I’m a generalist, and not good at any one thing in particular I always really admire people that are. Masayoshi is a balloon artist who makes plantlife, animals, and insects using only balloons, I can’t get my head round how some of them are made.
4. Slime Videos
Unfortunately I don’t get Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR), I really wish I did. Instead I have found just general enjoyment and relaxation from watching Slime videos online. There is a huge community of young people who have created mini empires designing, manufacturing and marketing their own slime products. It has its own little ecosystem on the internet. It’s pretty hard to explain to people why I like this stuff, I think I like the creativity that goes into designing a slime, and how dedicated and driven these business moguls are at 14 years old.
5. Peggy’s Cartoon Up
Peggy Noland is an artist and all round rad human whose every endeavour or creation is better than the last. Her recent project Peggy’s Cartoon Up is a YouTube series where Peggy does makeovers on people’s cars. This show reminds me how much I love the internet, and if you ever wondered what a car covered in Holographic rainbow wrap looked like you can find it here.
