Friday Five with Thomas O’Brien

Thomas O’Brien is an NYC-based interior and home furnishings designer. He is the founder and President of design firm Aero Studios and proprietor of Aero Ltd., the retail extension of the studio.

Since opening Aero’s doors in 1992, O’Brien has been celebrated for his ability to translate modernism into a warm and livable style; one based in comfort and tradition as much as spare streamlining. His work is known for its unique blend of refined yet easy domesticity and vintage elegance. His traditional-to-modern approach, including partnerships with American brands such as Reed & Barton and Hickory Chair, defines the Thomas O’Brien brand of new-classic home furnishings, with furniture, lighting, tableware, textiles, carpets, and bedding and bath collections. In addition, O’Brien is widely recognized for his popular Vintage Modern collection for Target. His work has been published in leading publications, including Architectural Digest, New York Times, Time, Town & Country, and Veranda, among others.

Check out some of Thomas’ favorite things:

1. Groomed boxwood

2. Katsura: Tradition and Creation in Japanese Architecture
One of the most beautiful books ever made.

3. White Pine

4. The Solarize function on my cell phone camera – my garden this summer

5. My favorite place in New York: the Venetian Bedroom at the Metropolitan Museum of Art
One of the first things that was part of the museum in its earliest days, acquired in 1906, more than a century ago. Quiet, dark and timeless. Everything pauses here.
