Friday Five with Wayne Hemingway

Since selling Red or Dead in the late 1990s, Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway of Hemingway Design, and their team of young designers (including a few young Hemingways!), have worked across just about every aspect of design from affordable housing, landscape and urban design, to event and museum design, graphic, fashion, and products for the home. After a fourteen year hiatus from the trade event calendar, at the Home 2013 interior show, which opens January 13 at Earls Court London, the team will bring together their products for the home in The Hemingway Home. Let’s see what makes this prolific designer tick in this week’s Friday Five.

1. “Home”
That’s the name of our home designed by Mrs H and built 15 years ago. It is the most wonderful place to live. It’s sustainable, done with real thrift, reusing materials, without compromising on luxury. And it seamlessly flows to the gardens.

2. Music, especially vinyl
I couldn’t get through a day without listening to some of my 7,000 strong vinyl collection (mainly Northern soul, disco, boogie, and funk). Music, fashion, and design have always been inseparable. Gerardine and I met in a disco when we were in our teens. It was music and fashion and a shared love of dancing to soul music that brought us together, and it is still with us!

3. Bicycles
Bikes are the  best invention ever. They transform our ability to get around, they’re low cost, and sustainable. This one here is truly inspirational; it’s a durable and cool looking bicycle made entirely of cardboard. And it looks like it can be produced commercially.

4.  The Seaside
I was born near the sea (Morecambe), live by the sea, and dream of evocative British resorts like Margate rising again. They will if the creative community helps make it happen.

5. Running
I can’t live without it. I find it inspirational; I find it relaxing; I find it can allow me to eat whatever I like. I even went through having a knee replaced and a rigorous physio programme so I could continue. I am running the London Marathon in April with my daughter Tilly, raising money for my favourite charity Oxfam. (After all, Gerardine and I started off selling charity shop finds on Camden Market 30 years ago.) Want to sponsor us?
