A Full Gut Renovation Merges Two Apartments into One

Vinegar Hill Apartment is the work of Brooklyn-based General Assembly, which required a full gut renovation to combine two new builder grade apartments in a developer’s building. The existing layouts didn’t work and they had to get rid of the extra kitchen, which basically meant absolutely everything was re-done from scratch, including new flooring, new electrical, new plumbing, and HVAC.

To make the most of the square footage, all of the functional spaces were laid out on one side of the apartment, while the other side was kept as open and loft-like as they could.

Much of the furniture throughout was custom built by local millworkers, Parts and Labor, which included the dining room table (which they also designed), the media credenza, the kitchen island, and the piece under the stairs. Besides the dining room table, the other pieces were designed by General Assembly themselves.

The bar was designed to hold dog bowls at the bottom, as the homeowners wanted their dogs to be factored into the design.
